Scribe

Terms of service

Last updated October 9, 2026

The short version: Scribe is free, open-source software. Use it however you like, at your own risk, and follow the law about recording people.

The software

Scribe is made by Eli Finer and published under the MIT license. That license is the agreement that covers your use, copying, modification and distribution of the app and its source code. It costs nothing, and there's no account to create.

Recording other people

Scribe records your microphone and the audio your Mac plays, which on a call means the other people in it. Laws about recording conversations differ from place to place. In some places everyone in the conversation has to agree before you record. You're responsible for knowing the rules where you and the people you talk to are, and for getting consent when it's needed. Scribe doesn't announce itself to anyone, so telling people is up to you.

No warranty

Scribe is provided as is, without any warranty. Transcripts can contain mistakes, a recording can fail, and the app can have bugs. Don't rely on it as the only record of something that matters. To the extent the law allows, the author isn't liable for any damage or loss that comes from using it.

Your data

Your recordings and transcripts are yours and stay on your Mac. See the privacy policy for exactly what happens to them.
